The concept

From temporary structure to mobile energy infrastructure

Scaffvolt Defence transforms temporary scaffold and frame structures into active energy-generating systems. Rather than being just a support structure, the frame itself becomes part of the energy solution.

The generated electricity can be used directly on site, stored in a battery container, or combined with generators in a hybrid energy configuration. This creates a flexible system that adapts to the deployment location and can scale from a compact field unit to a larger mobile energy park.

The challenge

Temporary deployment requires reliable, flexible energy

Defence operations depend on electricity for communications, lighting, IT, sensors, drones, charging infrastructure, workshops and operational support. In the field, generators are still commonly used. At the same time, the Dutch Ministry of Defence is working on more efficient and future-proof energy systems for operational equipment. Scaffvolt Defence fits into that development as an additional layer of local generation and hybrid energy use.

01

Fuel logistics

Fuel requires transport, replenishment and storage on site.

02

Noise and heat

Generators create noise and heat signatures.

03

No fixed infrastructure

Temporary locations often lack suitable roofs or fixed grid access.

04

Growing energy demand

Energy demand is increasing due to digitalisation, electrification and drone use.

Scaffvolt Defence adds a flexible, rapidly deployable layer of local solar energy to temporary military infrastructure.

The core system

Four building blocks. One flexible energy solution.

Scaffvolt Defence combines four interlocking elements into one flexible, scalable field energy system.

01

Glass-free, lightweight polymer solar panels

Panels from Solarge: 50% lighter than conventional glass-aluminium panels, 100% recyclable, PFAS-free and produced in the Netherlands. For mobile applications: easier to transport, safer to handle and suitable for more compact panel formats.

02

Modular scaffold and frame structure

Panels are integrated into a temporary, rapidly deployable frame. Flexible in size, adaptable to terrain and scalable in energy capacity.

03

Battery storage

Local storage for evening and night-time use, charging cycles, peak demand and quieter operational periods with reduced generator use.

04

Smart energy management

An EMS balances solar generation, battery storage, local consumption and optional generator back-up in hybrid configurations.

Glass-free technology

Designed for temporary deployment, not for a fixed roof

Traditional solar panels are mainly designed for long-term installation on buildings or fixed solar fields. Scaffvolt Defence requires something different: a panel that fits mobile logistics, repeated handling and rapid installation in temporary environments. That is why we use glass-free, lightweight polymer-based solar panels.

Lighter

Lower weight simplifies logistics, handling and installation in mobile environments.

Glass-free

No conventional glass surface as found in standard panels, better aligned with temporary structures and repeated assembly cycles.

Robust in use

Solarge positions the panels as unbreakable and resistant to demanding conditions such as hail, snow and wind.

Flexible deployment

Suitable for compact, easier-to-handle panel formats in mobile frame structures.

Circular and Dutch-made

100% recyclable, PFAS-free and produced in the Netherlands. Aligned with sustainable Defence procurement.

Current status

From construction-site innovation to Defence application

Scaffvolt was originally developed to provide clean temporary energy at locations where conventional energy infrastructure is limited. The current Scaffvolt website focuses on construction sites, scaffold-integrated solar panels, battery storage and reducing generator use. For Defence, the concept is being developed further into a lighter, more flexible and more operationally relevant system.
